Medilink Midlands and the City of Mentor announced a strategic collaboration to promote bilateral trade and investment between the Midlands region of the UK and Northeast Ohio, in August 2018.
The City of Mentor is located in Northeast Ohio just a 20-minute drive from downtown Cleveland and is part of a cluster of life science and biomedical companies that have grown up around the Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s leading hospitals. There are over 700 medical and bioscience companies in and around Mentor and the Greater Cleveland area and the cluster includes world-leading companies such as General Electric, Siemens, Philips, Toshiba, Hitachi, and STERIS.
Northeast Ohio is also home to internationally recognized clinical research institutions, including the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University, providing Mentor biomedical and med-tech companies with a world-class platform for research, design, and innovation.

Opportunity: International Conference on Innovation October 2019
A Medilink Midlands delegation will visit Mentor for a second time, from 21-23 October 2019.
As part of this, Medilink Midlands is looking to invite eligible companies to join and make in-roads into the American healthcare market.
Highlights of the trip will include:
- briefings from local government officials, Team NEO, JobsOhio on opportunities for international companies and incentives for investment and growth in Mentor and Northeast Ohio.
- A tour of Lakeland Community College’s state-of-the-art Health Technologies Building,
- Meetings with regional MedTech and BioTech companies and area hospitals at Cleveland’s Global Centre for Health Innovation.
- Hearing from a speaker from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on entry into the US market and the required processes and procedures for FDA approval.
- A Full Day at the 17th Annual Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit – Among those invited to attend are Industry Leaders from:
- Diagnostics, Pharma, Device, and Health IT companies;
- Venture capitalists, angel investors and investment bankers;
- Early-stage company founders, innovators and aspiring entrepreneurs;
- Providers, researchers and technology transfer professionals;
- Clinical, medical affairs, regulatory and business development executives; and consultants, attorneys and other service providers.
Over 700 Life Science firms are located in and around Mentor and the Greater Cleveland area, including over 400 medical device manufacturers specialising in imaging, neuro-stimulation, orthopaedics, cardiovascular, and sterilisation. Among these are world leaders such as General Electric Healthcare, Siemens, Toshiba, Hitachi, Philips Healthcare, and STERIS.
Internationally recognised clinical research institutions, including the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and Case Western Reserve University, provide Life Science companies with a world-class platform for research, design, and innovation.

Mentor-UK Visit – May 2019
In May of 2019, a delegation of City Leaders from Mentor, Ohio visited the UK to meet with and assist companies who were interested in doing business in Northeast Ohio and establishing a business in the region. As part of their visit, they saw some of the excellent life science facilities and companies in the Midlands. This included the Charnwood Campus, in Leicestershire, Nottingham Trent University, in Nottinghamshire, the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network, in Birmingham and Ken Filipiak, City Manager for the City of Mentor, spoke at the Med-Tech Innovation Expo and Conference, at the NEC in Birmingham. As part of their visit to the conference, the Mentor delegation was also able to meet with Midlands companies who had ambitions of doing business in and with Mentor.
International Trade Conference – October 2018
The City of Mentor, in Northeast Ohio, hosted a delegation of Midlands Life Science companies in October 2018, to help promote trade and investment between the Midlands and the USA, as part of a strategic collaboration between the two regions. This was the first official visit of a Medilink Midlands representative to Mentor and was part of the planned activities to forge stronger international ties between the two regions.
Northeast Ohio is a rapidly growing centre of innovation in Healthcare, MedTech and Bioscience and was looking to encourage collaboration with companies and healthcare providers in their area on an international basis. As part of the trade mission, an offer to attend a special International Trade Conference was arranged by the City of Mentor, including attending the nearby Cleveland Clinic 2018 Medical Innovation Summit.
